Tom Quayle, Martin Miller, Jack Gardiner

So last weekend was pretty awesome. I got to watch fusion masters Tom Quayle and Martin Miller perform a duo jazz gig in some club I’ve never heard of in Ormskirk for a fiver… Five pounds for an evening watching two players who are at the absolute top of their game, what an absolute pleasure.

Tom and Martin worked their way through their own arrangements of Jazz standards doing some truly mind boggling things in the process, they even threw in a couple of arrangements of Martins own work from his solo album.

After a short break they were joined onstage by local musician and phenomenal guitar player Jack Gardiner for an epic three way jam which was a considerably noisier affair which to be honest, the room full of fellow guitar players were just fine with.

If that wasn’t enough, Tom and Martin held a duo masterclass the next evening at Sound Affects music studio in Ormskirk which I obviously got a ticket for. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and studying with Tom on several occasions but this was my first time meeting Martin and wow, what a nice guy. Martin talks to you like you have known each other for years and it is impossible not to like him. Then you hear him play and your jaw drops…

As ever, the masterclass was great fun with great people, very informative and definitely inspirational.

As I understand it, the plan is for these guys to do more of this stuff in the future. If they are near you next time, just get the tickets and trust me, you will be blown away.

Here are the guys playing one their arrangement of Martins track ‘Between You and Me’.
