When Sam booked a free trial guitar lesson saying he was already quite experienced with his guitar playing I looked forward to the challenge.

Sam had been having several lessons recently with different tutors as he was trying to find the right one for him. I was impressed with this as I believe it’s a sensible approach and it showed a high level of commitment on his part to his continuing development.

I love seeing my students learn from the ground up and can ensure they learn the right way (or from my experience what I consider to be the best way) and can watch them grow into talented musicians but when an experienced player asks for a lesson it’s a whole different ball game.

Not only do I have to work out what they know already, but I also need to pick up their techniques, their style and ensure they haven’t picked up any bad habits along the way. It’s a much more challenging experience as a teacher and one I that I genuinely enjoy a lot.

So, Sam comes into his lesson with a solid year of learning under his belt and we get down to what he knows, what he wants to know and where he wants his playing to be in the future. By the end of the lesson we had established a few key area’s in both his knowledge and technique that we could immediately start improving upon.

After the lesson I hoped he would consider continuing his lessons but you never know with these things and I was aware that he was due to have lessons with other tutors. Anyway I got an email later this evening and I liked it enough to write this blog post about it…

Hi Wayne,

I just wanted to drop you a quick email to say thanks for the guitar lesson tonight, whilst only 30 minutes I found it very insightful and also gained a lot from it.

I have decided that I would like to carry on with you as my tutor because I can see myself making excellent progress with you teaching me, and like I said to you, the session with you was definitely one of the best I’ve had so far.

Hope you enjoy your weekend.

Awesome!
